Abstract

Nowadays, Dyson presents to the market the new Dyson Corrale TM cordless hair straightener, which is equipped with new and better technology. The purpose of this paper is to explain the design, and the new technology implemented in the Dyson Corrale TM hair straightener. This article includes the history, the main parts and their functions, and how the creation of this hair straightener is innovating in the beauty market.

Introduction

Since 1991 the Dyson company has always been at the forefront creating and patenting products for daily use in the home, it began by creating vacuum cleaners, air purifiers, hand dryers and lights. (Bano, 2019) In 2000 it was considered one of the largest vacuum cleaner manufacturing companies. (Bano, 2019) In 2016 Dyson took an unexpected turn in the market focusing mainly on the production of beauty tools. Sir James Dyson saw the damage that regular hair dryers do to hair and upon seeing them he expressed “Hair dryers can be heavy, inefficient, and make a racket. By looking at them further, we realized that they can also cause extreme heat damage to hair.” (Angel, 2020) With this idea in mind, Dyson challenged and tested the skills of his team of engineers and designers in order to create hair-friendly beauty tools, which main purpose is to minimize heat damage to hair. The result, the new Dyson Corrale TM hair straightener. It was a four years project, approximately $71 million dollars invested in the creation of this new “hair- friendly” line, more than 600 prototypes, several patents pending and arduous testing. (Chan, 2020) All of this work paid off, as they identified some of the main flaws of most of the hair straighteners currently on the market and created one of the best hair straighteners currently on the market. The new Dyson Corrale hair straightener is wireless, and combines different technologies to less mistreat different types of hair.

Background

The evolution of hair straighteners during all these years has always been at the forefront.
Isaac Shero patented the first hair straightener in 1809. (Angel, 2020) Shero was the one who originally owned the idea of pressing two hot plates in order to give the hair a different shape. The first hair straighteners were hot plates used and created in the year 1909 by Isaac K. Shero. (Bano, 2019)

The first heat wands were created and used for the first time by Erica Feldman. (Figure 2). Around 1912, Lady Jennifer Bell Schofield put an unexpected twist on the beauty market by creating the first hair straightener consisting of two metal plates that is in fact very similar to the model we still using nowadays. (Angel, 2020)

Currently, on the market there is a lot of variety in the types of plates. Among the types of plates we can find: ceramic plates, ionic technology plates, which basically serves to reduce frizz, plates with tourmaline crystals, digital plates, and currently the Dyson Corrale TM hair straightener. This new hair tool is a wireless hair straightener that combines different technologies with the main purpose of maltreating the hair as little as possible.

Among its most important features are the intelligent heat control, which is a cutting-edge technology that adjusts the temperature of the plate 100 times per second to provide the right one for each type of hair and the flexible plate design that adapts to all forms of hair.

whose function is to apply the necessary heat and tension so as not to leave out any strand of hair. (Chan, 2020)

List of Parts and Functions

The brand new Dyson Corrale TM hair straightener launched on the market is equipped with new technology. It is the first Dyson hair tool which doesn’t use air, which represents a departure for the brand that has made air the secret weapon in its clean and hair tools.

This hair straightener is composed of copper and manganese alloy plates, among the most important characteristics of this novel hair straightener is that it was invented to flex, shape and gather for an improved hairstyle with half the damage of the hair and even without a cord.

I. Pioneering Corraling Plate Technology

Dyson is proposing a radical change by creating smart and flexible copper manganese alloy plates, shown in figure 3, that make it stand out from the competition. According to Dyson, this tool creates smooth hair by reducing the level of heat damage caused by traditional hair straighteners by up to 50 percent. All this is possible thanks to the flexibility built into its plates, which is a carefully balanced amalgamation of six metals to provide the optimum flexibility, strength and thermal conduction. (Chan, 2020)

Each plate is precision machined to 65 microns, which is the regular width of a human hair, tourmaline edged to produce ionizing properties that help reduce static. (Chan, 2020) This amazing technology allows the hair straightener to adapt to the thickness of

the hair, gathering it together and preventing the hair from splaying, which in turn allows the plates to apply only the necessary amount of tension and heat throughout the way along hair’s lengths, which consequently means that less heat is required and therefore the damage caused to the hair is less than the damage created by traditional hair straighteners.

The name of the tool is actually a play on the word corral, which means, “to gather together”. (Murdoch-Smith, 2020)

II. Intelligent Heat Control

The new Dyson Corrale TM hair straightener has three precise heat settings which are: 330°F,365°F and 410°F these temperatures are regulated 100 times per second. This technology communicates with a microprocessor, which is shown in Figure 4,that in turn, controls the heating system delivering precise and accurate heat. This technology offers the users the versatility to adapt the settings in order to suit their hair type and the desired style. (Chan, 2020)

This adaptability, in conjunction with the control provided by the flex plates, allow users to get the desired styles at lower temperatures, which reduces considerably the hair damage caused by heat.

III. Four Cell Lithium-Ion Battery

Dyson engineers created the Dyson Corrale TM hair straightener battery based on the battery technology that was previously developed for cordless vacuum cleaners.
Dyson Corrale TM hair straightener is powered by a four cell lithium- ion battery, shown in Figure 5, that fully recharges in just 70 minutes and provides more than 30 minutes of cordless styling. (Chan, 2020)

The dyson expertise assure that the Dyson Corrale TM hair straightener offers the same thermal performance of a corded product with the cordless adaptability and universal voltage that allows users to style anywhere, anytime

IV. Ergonomic Charging Base

This product comes with an ergonomic charging base, which is shown in Figure 6. It acts as a dressing table stand for the tool. This vanity holder notifies the user once the hair straightener has reached the correct temperature and is ready to be use. Placing the iron on the ergonomic charging base at regular intervals of time while styling provides a hybrid-charging mode for longer styling sessions. (Chan, 2020)

V. Flight Mode Feature

Another of its greatest qualities of the Dyson Corrale TM hair straightener is the flight mode feature. The flight mode function ensures that the device meets air travel criteria and that it can be stored safely in carry-on luggage for travel. (Chan, 2020)

In order to activate the flight mode you just have to detach the small square that has an airplane on it as it is shown in Figure 7.

Conclusion

In conclusion, for decades conventional straighteners rely on solid plates, but solid plates can’t shape around the hair to gather it. This limits control while styling, since the tension is applied unevenly, which increases hair damage. Dyson has taken a step forward and set very high expectation in the beauty market with the creation of the new Dyson Corrale TM cordless hair straightener. Among the most important innovations that this hair tool has are the flexibility, strength and thermal conduction incorporated in its plates. The flexibility on its plates has as main goal to adapt to any type of hair, producing more control so tension can be applied more evenly than traditional plates. This enables the users to create the style they want at lower temperatures and thus reduces the heat damage by up to 50 percent. This brand new hair-straightening tool has the innovative four cell lithum-ion battery, which has the ability to deliver the same thermal performance as when plugged in, making it a really brilliant, efficient and convenient hair styling tool.
